A drunk driver slammed into a police car, slightly injuring a San Rafael Police Department officer at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 30).
The officer was on patrol driving through the Canal District at the intersection at Francisco Boulevard East and Bellam Boulevard when a speeding Dodge Dart ran the red light and broadsided the police car.
The force of the collision pushed the police car nearly 100 feet and caused minor injuries to the officer.
The driver of the Dodge, identified as Lopez Perez, was drunk and unlicensed, police said. He was arrested and jailed. In 2022, 1,069 people died in California in DUI crashes.
