DUI traffic stop in Novato

July 21, 2024 by Marin 2 Comments

7/18/24 – On Thursday night, around 10:15PM, NPD Patrol Officers responded to the report of a vehicle vs. tree collision in the area of Redwood Blvd. The first officer on scene observed the involved vehicle stopped on a grassy embankment.

The vehicle then decided to leave the scene and a traffic stop was conducted. The driver was contacted, and a large canister of nitrous oxide was visible to the officer inside the vehicle. The driver displayed signs and symptoms consistent with being under the influence and was arrested.

The driver was also found to be a missing person from Southern California.

After further investigation, it was determined no collision had occurred, however over 100 used cannisters of nitrous oxide were located inside the vehicle along with several unopened ones. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The driver was safely booked in to the Marin County Jail for driving under the influence.

This is a good reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving under the influence can result in traffic collisions, causing injury or even death.

Driver Safety Tips:

– If you have ingested an impairing substance, such as prescription drugs, sleep medication, marijuana, or any illegal drug, do not drive.

– Know someone who has ingested an impairing substance? Do not let them get behind the wheel.

– Passengers should never ride with an impaired driver. If you think a driver may be impaired, do not get in the car.

– If hosting a party, make sure everyone has a sober ride home.

– Always wear your seat belt. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

– Use a ride share.

– If you see an impaired driver, call law enforcement.

Stay safe Novato!
