In an apparent mix-up on proper protocol for flying the American Flag on Veterans Day, the town of Fairfax lowered the flag to half mast. On Veterans Day protocol is to fly the flag at full mast all day.
On Memorial Day, the flag is to be flown at half mast until noon, then flown at full mast the remainder of the day.
City Hall was closed on Saturday, Nov. 11. Citizens noticed and contacted the Ross Valley Reporter. An email sent to the town manager about the issue returned with this message:
“Heather Abrams, Fairfax Town Manager is out of the office for Veterans Day.”
This town continues to amaze me. Once more, they show their incompetence.
It shows that all the Town staff knows about Veterans Day is that it’s a paid day off.
The Ross Valley Fire Department maintains the American Flag at Fairfax Town Hall. Following an inquiry from the Ross Valley Reporter, the Town Manager reached out to the Interim Fire Chief and he said:
“It appears the flag was never raised back up. I have asked that the crews raise it back to full mast. Sorry for the misunderstanding.”
While the editor of the paper contacted the Town and received this response, it is not reflected in the article. Nor is there anything about the banners the Town had made and placed downtown to celebrate Fairfax Veterans, the newsletter article highlighting a local veteran, nor the repair of the Veteran’s Fountain in Bolinas Park.
