Fear the fork: Public hearing in Novato on banning single-use plastic food ware

April 22, 2023 by Marin Leave a Comment

Novato City Council will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, to consider adopting an ordinance that would prohibit single-use plastic foodware (including bioplastics) at Novato-based businesses with a food facility permit issued by the County of Marin. The ordinance would also require reusable foodware be used for dine-in operations and compostable and/or all-aluminum foodware be provided for take-out services.

The Public Hearing will be held during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 25, 2022, at Novato City Hall, 901 Sherman Avenue, beginning at 6pm. The agenda for the meeting is available online: novato.org/agendas.

Input from our community is important, and comments on the proposed ordinance can be provided by email at novatocouncil@novato.org, by eComment at novato.org/ecomment or in-person/virtually on April 25 at the Public Hearing. For more info on how to participate visit: novato.org/agendas.

To ensure consistency across Marin County and avoid confusion for both businesses and consumers, the proposed ordinance is modeled on an ordinance adopted by Marin County Board of Supervisors on May 10, 2022.

If adopted by Novato City Council, enforcement of the ordinance would be carried out by County Environmental Health Services Division staff as part of the food facility inspection program. In order to allow time for businesses to deplete existing non-compliant stock and procure compliant foodware items, enforcement of the ordinance would be delayed until November 2023.
