Frederick Commentary: Too many dots not to connect

August 7, 2021 by Marin Leave a Comment

Sherman R. Frederick

The scoreboard at Memorial Park in San Anselmo suddenly featured the numbers “1488.” For most people, that means nothing. But authorities tell us it is actually a white supremacist code of some sort — a dog whistle for hateful creeps in the shadows of Marin.

No one knows who posted the message. Police are investigating. In the meanwhile, allow me to connect a few dots:

Dot 1: San Anselmo Mayor Brian Colbert, who is Black, has been subject to serious racial threats, so much so he says he fears for his safety.

Dot 2: Just a few miles up the road, the FBI tells us the agency is searching for a Mill Valley resident who is alleged to have participated in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol Building.

Dot 3: A little more than a year ago, local high schoolers in what is believed to be an anti-semetic act were caught making lists of Jewish students in public school and distributing them to other students.

Dot 4: And, don’t forget about that young man who, before the pandemic hit, was chased out of town in Fairfax for distributing Nazi propoganda. His message: “We Are Everywhere.”

So, allow me then to ask the fart-in-the-elevator question. Do we have a hidden community here? You have to admit that for beautiful, peaceful Marin this is an unusual amount of dots to connect.

YOUR LACK OF FAITH IS DISTURBING

The CDC has done it again. It reversed itself on masks for the vaccinated. Remember, it was only 30 days ago that President Joe Biden declared victory over COVID-19. We were supposed to be free of masks. The president even said so — twice — on national teevee. The vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask, he said.

The masked governor.

Well, like the president himself, that statement didn’t age well. Even here in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom went from speaking to us through a smiley-face mask of encouragement to threatening us through a Darth Vader mask.

Two weeks ago his own press release promised hope of defeating COVID via the cooperation with local health agencies:

“SACRAMENTO – With nearly 77 percent of California adults at least partially vaccinated, and more than 74 percent of those aged 12+ having received at least one dose, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will continue work in partnership with local health officials and community organizations across the state to fight disinformation, spur demand for COVID-19 vaccinations and focus on equity as some communities contend with rising levels of illness among the unvaccinated. Vaccines remain the best protection against COVID-19, including the highly infectious Delta variant.”

Now, the governor has ordered all state workers and health care workers to wear a mask or be tested once a week for COVID. He wants local governments and private businesses to adopt the same mask-up-or-else policy, which, of course, most will.

So, color me confused. We were promised by no less than the president of the United States that if we got vaccinated we’d be free of masks. We got vaccinated only now to be told we still must wear a mask or possibly lose our jobs.

That is disappointing in the extreme.

MEANWHILE, IN OAKLAND

Marin County favorite daughter Barbara Boxer (also former U.S. Senator) was assaulted and robbed last week in Jack London Square. Luckily for Ms. Boxer, 80, Oakland is a “defund the police” city. So, she won’t have to testify against her assailant because there is, like, zero chance of an arrest. Ms. Boxer, however, will be assigned a Berkeley intern social worker to help her work through the trauma.

ONE MORE THING

— Your a good reader if you just flinched.

— When you can’t think of a word, say: “I forget the English word for it.” That way people will think you are bilingual, instead of an idiot.

— I asked my wife if I was the only one she’d been with. She said, “yes, the others were solid nines and tens.”

 — Mashed potatoes are Irish guacamole.

— I see people mountain biking. I’m going to do that, too, as soon as I can get my leg through my underwear in the morning without losing my balance.

— Excuse us while we attend to a reader overcome by last week’s parting jokes.

Thanks for dropping by this week. We are glad to have you. Happy trails until we meet again. Live free, be kind and always question authority.
