Senior Nicole Bermudez and sophomore Haley Garcia claimed a doubles victory on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 27, but Dominican women’s tennis fell 7-0 to No. 17 Fresno Pacific at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Mariia Borodii and Lea Falentin grabbed the first victory of the match for the Sunbirds (2-4) with a 6-1 victory in No. 1 doubles. Bermudez and Garcia grabbed the lead early for the Penguins (1-3) in their doubles match and then held steady to edge out Alice Marques and Daimy Paula 6-4. Alice De Matteo and Sanne Brull grabbed an early 4-1 lead in No. 2 doubles for FPU, but Kamar Alajeely and Kaitlyn Nguyen held serve and got a break point to close within a game. Di Matteo and Brull held serve for the 6-4 victory to give the Sunbirds the first team point of the match.
Falentin helped keep the FPU momentum going in singles as she took the 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 2 singles. Brull then added a 6-1, 6-0 victory on No. 5 singles and Di Matteo put the Sunbirds within a point of the clinch with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles. Paula clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory for FPU.
