Gang related shooting leaves one injured in San Rafael’s Canal District

The San Rafael Police Department is investigating a gang-related shooting that occurred Sunday, Nov. 12, on Novato Street.  One man was injured by a bullet ricochet. He was treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  

No suspects have been arrested at this time and remain at large. ,

At 11:10 p.m, an officer and witnesses heard multiple gunshots fired in the area of Novato Street in the Canal Neighborhood of San Rafael.  Officers responded to the unit block of Novato Street near Kerner Boulevard and located a man who had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper leg.  Officers also located multiple bullet casings at the scene.

SRFD arrived at the scene and provided medical care to the victim.  The victim was transported to a local hospital for additional medical attention.

During the preliminary investigation, witnesses reported that a vehicle had been driving on Novato Street and had been yelling at several people on the street, including the victim.  It is believed that suspects may have been yelling something related to gang activity just before the shooting took place.  Several of the shots fired struck the ground and struck the side of a parked car.  One of the bullets that struck the ground is believed to have ricocheted and struck the victim.  

Officers canvassed the scene and located multiple bullet casings and fragments at the scene. Officers also located several consumed and partially consumed alcoholic beverage containers.
