Led by the Office of Equity, Marin County recently launched its first-ever participatory budgeting initiative. The County is making $2.5 million available and community members will decide how to spend it. This new, equitable way of making decisions about publicly funded projects is called Participatory Budgeting.
Community members propose ideas, turn their ideas into grant proposals ranging from $10,000 – $250,000, and vote on which proposals to fund.
Join us for an interactive community forum this Friday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Examples of ideas include building a community garden, repairing a soccer field, or creating a community program such as an arts and culture program for youth or a program to promote affordable homeownership, just to name a few.
RSVP by e-mail at Michelle@First5Marin.org.
The most popular idea on the PB budget website to date is to help fund Botanical Conservatories to improve a person’s mental and physical health. The organization supports economic development, provides thousands of pounds of food for local food banks, and helps increase the bee population. Food forests have many positive impacts on the environment and humanity.
