Gov. Gavin Newsom, speaking from his house where he is under quarentine for potential exposure to COVID-19, said on Monday that the state may run out of ICU beds by Christmas.

In one of his most dire briefings of the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Newsom said: “The red flags are flying in terms of the trajectory in our projections of growth. If these trends continue, we’re going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic, action.”

In November California reported just under 9,500 virus cases a day on average. In the last week of November, the average surged to 14,000 cases.

Due to Thanksgiving and corresponding travel, health officials next week’s numbers will be worse. About 10 percent of cases turn into hospitalizations.

Newsom, his wife and his children, are under quarantine after a security officer for the family tested positive for the virus.
