Marin Rep. Jared Huffman called for the arrest of President Trump on charges of sedition, following the riot and storming of the Capitol Wednesday by supporters of the president.

The day after the riot on Jan. 6, Rep. Huffman on Twitter said “Let’s be clear: impeachment must happen.”

“No one can argue, at this point, that there was just misunderstandings or that these were innocent expressions of patriotism,” Huffman said. “This is a violent coup attempt and it has been instigated by an American president and people have to be held accountable.”

Huffman also had harsh words for Capitol police, saying that some of the officers “sympathized with the insurrectionists.”

“Yesterday’s failed coup attempt at the Capitol demands that we ask some difficult, uncomfortable questions. Despite their overall bravery, loyalty to their mission, and plenty of heroism, were there elements within Capitol Police that sympathized with the insurrectionists and actually helped them? I’m not at all satisfied with the explanations we’ve heard thus far. I’ve seen Capitol Police respond more assertively to people in wheelchairs protesting the repeal of Obamacare than what we saw from some of them yesterday in response to a violent mob that everyone knew was trying to overturn our democracy.”

Huffman also called President Trump “a very sinister criminal.”

Rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, following a rally with President Trump in which the president again asserted that the election was stolen from him by questionable voting procedures in several states. Despite his allegations, no evidence of widespread voter fraud has been shown.

Four people were killed in the storming of the Capitol, including a Capitol police officer.

North Coast State Sen. Mike McGuire called the riot “a terrorist act.”

“Lives were lost, blood was shed and it was all stoked by a deranged president who can’t handle the fact that the American people voted him out of office.”
