Dear editor,
In response to the article “God, the Constitution and abortion” by Bob Topper in the December 8th issue of The Novato Advance, may I point out that abortion is the pre-meditated taking of a human life, which by definition is murder, and no one has the right to murder another person, especially an innocent. Murder – which is different than killing – is never justified, especially when it is done knowingly and by design.
As to the right of a woman to personally decide what is appropriate for herself, that is a justifiable right. However, in the case of abortion, another life is at stake, and a woman’s right to decide for herself alone ceases when another person is involved, especially when that other person has no say and no choice in the matter, and is totally, and absolutely, innocent.
And speaking of the Constitution, the 14th Amendment specifically prohibits “depriving any person of life… without due process…nor deny any person…equal protection of the law.”
True, the 14th begins by stating that “all persons born…in the United States… are citizens.” Please note, however, that in order for any person to be born that person must first be conceived and then undergo [9] months of gestation. Furthermore, every birth is, and always has been, of a human being – who is obviously human even before being born. The 14th then goes on to say “nor shall any state deprive any person of life,” it does not say “deprive any citizen of life,” and every unborn is a person.
The Supreme Court avoided the issue of when life begins because if life begins at conception [which it does], every fetus is guaranteed the right to life under the 14th Amendment.
Prohibition was an amendment to the Constitution and was never in the original document. Abortion, by contrast, is neither an amendment nor is it in the original. As always, murder is never justified.
