Famous South African singer Jonathan Butler has accused a St. Helena restaurant, Goose & Gander, of racism. He posted a video on TikTok saying that the restaurant manager followed him outside after he paid the bill and asked if he “took care” of his server. Butler, who is Black, said dinner was great but felt the actions afterwards were racist. Restaurant representatives said it should not have happened and apologized.
Why does he think that it was because he was black? Maybe he just didn’t tip the employees and the employee/manager was being very rude, but not racist?
It may Suck being that “manager”… YUCK!
That person should be fired ASAP.
Here is my take on tipping… I am now, and have always been 100% against tipping…
It is a practice which allows an employer to pay minimum or sub standard wages to an employee, expecting the diner to pick up the slack… I vehemently support workers rights,,, but I am not the waiter’s employer… I have owned several service oriented business’s of my own and paid my employees well… I expected my employees to give excellent service to my customers who patronized by business and were not expected to tip. Not every job in the word demands or expects tipping…
I say to the restaurant owner… pay your wait staff a decent wage…. raise the price of the menu if you wish… If I think it is too high, I won’t eat there, but I am not your employee’s benefactor… I expect excellent service and if they are not representing your establishment well….. bye bye…
I was chased out of a NYC restaurant once because the mgr did not see the 20.00 tip under the dish…
He said to me…. “I think you have forgotten something”
I said yes… you are right…. i went back in and picked up the twenty and left.
Woe to any mgr who ever follows me out the door again
