NOVATO
Good Boy: Last week, CHP Solano, CHP Golden Gate Air Operations, and CHP Golden Gate Division, pursued suspected carjacking suspects from Solano County to the Terra Linda area. Officer Macias and K9 Rookie responded to assist the Marin County Sheriff, San Rafael Police Department and CHP Marin with a search for the suspects. The deputies and CHP officers quickly took the suspects into custody. K9 Rookie was able to then pivot his mission from assisting with a person search to a scent article search. K9 Rookie discovered evidence that the suspects are believed to have discarded while fleeing from the pursued vehicle. As a regular part of K9 Rookie’s weekly training, scent article searches are helpful to recover discarded evidence or when searching for missing persons.
Fraud: In April of 2022, a 1967 Mustang convertible was reported stolen. According to the victim, they left the vehicle with GPM Motors owner, Geoffrey Palermo, in 2020 for repairs. Over the next several months, the victim paid approximately $34,000 for repairs. After not hearing from Palermo, the victim visited Palermo’s shop and discovered he had closed his business and the Mustang had disappeared. Then, on June 14, 2023, the Novato Police Department’s Investigations Section located an advertisement on Craigslist for a similar Mustang. In an undercover capacity, a detective arranged to view the vehicle listed on Craigslist. Once the vehicle’s VIN was confirmed, NPD detectives arrested the seller. The seller was identified as Geoffrey Palermo. Palermo was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for several charges including fraud. The vehicle was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.
SAN RAFAEL
On June 27, SRPD officers arrested Jose Arguello-Gutierrez, a 59-year-old San Rafael resident, after he fired a handgun and then threatened people using the Starkweather Shoreline Pathway. The gun was recovered, and Arguello-Gutierrez was booked into the Marin County Jail on several felony charges.
Officers determined that Arguello-Gutierrez fired the gun one time into the air. Officers retraced the steps where Arguello-Gutierrez was seen firing the gun and located an empty ammunition casing that matched the caliber of the found handgun. Officers also located video surveillance showing Arguello-Gutierrez pointing the gun at the head of a bicyclist using the path. Nobody was physically injured during the incident.
