Marin 911: Man rams car into cop

December 21, 2022 by Marin Leave a Comment

You’ve heard of “Coffee with a Cop?”   San Rafael Officers recently visited Pickleweed Preschool for “Cocoa with a Cop”.  Officers visited four different classes, read holiday books and had cocoa with the students.  Above, Sgt. Mathis shares a fun book with the children. Children in each class thanked the officers.

Officer Hurt: The San Rafael Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating and identifying two suspects wanted in connection with stealing a car and assaulting an officer with the stolen vehicle when officers tried to stop the suspect.  The suspect driver is described as a 25 to 40-year-old man, 6 feet tall, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans.  The passenger is described as a female, with no additional description available at this time. At about 4:45 p.m. on Dec. 8  SRPD received a call about a car stolen from the Mercedes dealership on Francisco Boulevard West.  Witnesses observed a man walk into the service garage and steal a customer’s vehicle. The vehicle was described as a 2021 black Mercedes GLS450 SUV.  Officers worked with the vehicle’s owner in an attempt to locate it using a GPS application.  However, at the time of the incident, the application was not working. At 10:15 p.m., the owner of the stolen Mercedes called and reported that the GPS application was working and that the vehicle was traveling in the Canal Neighborhood of San Rafael.  Officers followed the tracking position of the vehicle and observed it enter into the San Rafael Yacht Harbor on Francisco Boulevard East. An officer in the area entered the parking lot of the yacht harbor, immediately located the vehicle, and drove in behind it to make a car stop.  The officer exited and stood behind the driver’s door of the police car to give the suspect commands.  While the officer was giving commands, the vehicle suddenly accelerated in reverse toward the officer and collided with the driver’s door of the police car, pinning, and injuring the officer. Additional officers arrived on the scene, and the stolen vehicle attempted to flee but was blocked.  The officer who had been pinned between the police car and the driver’s door fell to the ground from being injured. The suspect rammed another police car blocking his path.  The suspect then turned the stolen vehicle around and drove toward the back of the parking lot.  After coming to a dead-end, the vehicle turned around again and came back toward officers and police cars at a high rate of speed.  The suspect was driving back toward the injured officer, who was limping and trying to get out of the way.  Two officers ran to the aid of the injured officer and placed themselves between the advancing suspect vehicle and the injured officer with their firearms pointed toward the suspect. Both officers, fearing that the suspect was going to run over the injured officer during his attempt to escape, gave orders for the suspect to stop.  The suspect suddenly stopped the vehicle. Seconds later, the suspect placed the vehicle in reverse and drove back toward the back of the parking lot.  Officer saw a female passenger in the stolen vehicle at this time. Officers ran to the back of the parking lot and located witnesses who reported that the suspect fled from the vehicle toward a boat dock.  Another witness reported that the suspect may have jumped into the water and swam away.  Both the male and female suspects were not found in the stolen vehicle. Officers established a perimeter, and a call was made for additional law enforcement resources.  Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist.  After an extensive search of the area, officers did not locate the suspect. SRPD Detectives took the stolen vehicle and processed it for evidence to develop leads to determine the suspects’ identity.  SRPD is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in this case.  The injured officer was taken to a local hospital and was released a short time later with non-life-threatening injuries.  The officer is expected to make a full recovery.

Stolen Vehicle: At  7:47 p.m. Dec. 12, Officers responded to a business alarm in the area of Fourth Street and Hetherton Street.  The first officer on scene located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot and ran the license which returned as a reported stolen vehicle. A single driver occupant was still in the vehicle.  Officers conducted a high-risk stop and took the suspect into custody without incident. The vehicle was processed for evidence and the suspect was taken to jail.  The vehicle was later returned to its rightful owner. The business alarm was determined to be a false alarm and not related to the stolen vehicle case.

NOVATO

Arrest: On Sunday, Dec. 11, at about 3 p.m Novato Police received a report of an injured woman lying on the sidewalk on Main Gate Road. Responding officers and Novato Fire personnel located the woman east of the parking lot entrance to the Hamilton SMART Train Station. It was apparent that the woman, who had been walking, was struck by a vehicle and the driver had fled the scene. The 19-year-old woman was transported to a local trauma center by the Novato Fire Protection District with moderate injuries. Officers obtained a detailed description of the suspect vehicle from images taken from a surveillance camera in the area. The vehicle was described as a silver four door sedan with damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, including a damaged mirror. Earlier this morning, around 10 a.m. a Novato Police officer, patrolling South Palm Drive in the Hamilton area, located a silver Lexus sedan with damage matching the suspect vehicle involved in the hit and run collision. The Novato Police Department Traffic Division responded to assist with the investigation. After conducting additional interviews and follow up, Robert Armond Lombardi, a 74-year-old Novato resident, was identified as the driver of the vehicle involved. Lombardi was placed under arrest for felony hit and run. During the arrest, officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on Lombardi. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia in addition to the original hit and run charges. Lombardi was booked at the Marin County Jail and his vehicle was taken as evidence.

We would like to thank the SMART Train personnel for their assistance in providing the video footage to officers, as this was a key factor in solving this case. From the submitted video, we were able to obtain a detailed description of the suspect vehicle and the damage. As a driver, it is important to always look out for pedestrians, especially when visibility may be more difficult. Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection and drivers should yield and prepare to stop. Drivers should never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you have any additional information regarding this case, please contact the Novato Police Department at 415-897-4361 and reference case number NP22-4512.
