The California Highway Patrol reported that CHP officers were attempting to stop the car when it pulled over at a bus exit and two passengers fled the scene. The car then sped off and later crashed near the Bel Marin Keys exit. The driver of the car fled the scene on foot. The young passenger was dead in the backseat. Suspicious Backpack: On June 30 around 4 a.m., a Novato Police Sergeant saw a motorcycle traveling northbound on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed. The sergeant attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcycle, however, the driver fled from the traffic stop. NPD Officers were able to locate the driver, identified as Chas Nicolas, 40-year-old resident of Cazadero, CA and arrested him for several violations.

Several hours later, Novato Response Team (NRT) Officers were conducting a follow up investigation related to this original incident in the same area of the arrest. A community member reported finding a backpack which contained a firearm with a serial number that had been removed, a motorcycle helmet, riding gloves, and a receipt that had Nicolas’ name on it. While NRT Officers were conducting their investigation, Nicolas, who was arrested several hours earlier, returned to attempt to retrieve the property he had left behind. Nicolas was arrested a second time for several felony offenses.

We would like to thank the community member for reporting the suspicious backpack. It is always a good idea to report suspicious items that are unattended by calling 415-897-4361 to avoid a dangerous situation from occurring.
