Underage Drinking: On Thursday, March 17, 2022, the Novato Police Department conducted a joint Minor Decoy Operation with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) due to an expected increase in alcohol-related crimes on St. Patrick’s Day. The goal was to make this year’s St. Patrick’s Day as safe as possible by utilizing the Department of ABC’s education and enforcement programs.
Novato Police Officers and ABC Agents visited four ABC licensed restaurants and sent in a Minor Decoy to ensure their employees were checking identifications carefully to prevent youth access to alcohol. Two of these restaurants sold an alcoholic beverage to the 19 year old decoy. Restaurant managers were educated with ABC-related laws during the investigation in addition to the criminal violation. “The purpose of these operations is to prevent underage minors from accessing alcohol. It’s important to protect our youth. There are too many alcohol-related DUI’s, traffic accidents and incidents that result in injury or death. By providing education, prevention, and enforcement efforts, we hope to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring,” said Sergeant Melissa Hinkle.
It is equally important to reduce DUI’s by assigning a designated driver before traveling from locations where alcohol is consumed. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), underage drinking is a significant problem in this country and on college campuses despite collective efforts to address them. The Novato Police Department has partnered with the Department of ABC to protect communities through education and by administering prevention and enforcement programs designed to increase compliance with California’s alcoholic beverage laws. ABC licensees and their employees are encouraged to take ABC’s online Licensing Education on Alcohol and Drugs (LEAD) training classes to help achieve higher compliance with alcoholic beverage laws. You can now take the training online.
