Skeleton: On Thursday (Sept. 09) at about 1:30 p.m. skeletonized human remains were discovered within the Point Reyes National Seashore west of Five Brooks Trailhead within the Olema Valley. An individual passing off-trail discovered the remains, contacted law enforcement and advised them of their observations. The setting was within a remote part of the park not near the hiking trail system. Due to the position and rugged terrain not accessible by motorized means, the National Park Service Rangers hiked to the reported location and completed a scene investigation. The remains were then transported from the scene to the Coroner Division laboratory for additional analysis and ongoing investigation. The overall condition of the remains and items located at the scene is suggestive of them having been exposed to the elements for a significant time period.
The remains have not been positively identified as of this writing. The identification process will be a long and laborious process involving the Coroner Division staff and subject matter experts from the State of California Department of Justice Missing and Unidentified Persons Section; the State of California Department Bureau of Forensic Services Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory; forensic anthropology services via California State University- Chico Human Identification Lab; and other specialists to include a forensic odontologist.
An examination and analysis of the recovered remains will be completed later this week by Chief Forensic Pathologist Dr. Joseph Cohen. The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the Point Reyes National Seashore National Park Service Rangers and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division.

Political Fight: On Sunday (Sept. 1) ,SRPD received reports of a suspect punching a man during a political rally on the US-101 freeway Coleman pedestrian overcrossing. The suspect fled the scene and is wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault resulting in great bodily injury. The suspect is described as a 25 to 35-year-old white male adult, 5 foot 11-inches to 6 foot tall, 180 to 190 pounds, shoulder-length curly red/blond hair, wearing a light-colored – possibly blue or green shirt, blue jeans, and blue baseball hat.
At 3:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol transferred a 9-1-1 call to the San Rafael Police Department reporting a physical altercation on the Coleman pedestrian crossing over the US-101 freeway. The initial report stated that a male subject was punching and kicking an older adult male and was then observed fleeing the overcrossing heading east toward the Coleman School area of San Rafael. Two additional 9-1-1 calls were made to SRPD reporting the same.
SRPD Officers arrived on the scene and located several witnesses along with the male victim on the ground who had been assaulted. The San Rafael Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene to assist the victim.
During the preliminary investigation, it was learned that several people were on the Coleman pedestrian overcrossing to promote their political viewpoints. The participants had posted several banners on the chain-link fence. Just before 3:20 PM, the above-described suspect walked onto the pedestrian overcrossing from the east side and began cutting down the banners with a knife.
While the suspect was cutting down one of the banners, he was confronted by the victim. The two men began to argue and push each other. The altercation escalated when the suspect began to punch the victim several times and caused the victim to fall to the ground.
After assaulting the victim, the suspect left, walking back toward the east side of the overcrossing. SRPD Officers searched for the suspect and were unable to locate him. It is believed the suspect left in a vehicle in an unknown direction.
The victim was transported to a local area hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
