A Sacramento man and woman were killed last Friday (May 6) when their fixed wing single engine Vans RV-10 plane crashed into the hillside of the Marin Headlands near Slackers Hill located northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The dead were identified as Michael B. Briare, 57, and Jennifer Lynn Fox, 52, both of Sacramento.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said the plane’s emergency beacon was activated at approximately 12:11 p.m.. Multiple First Responder agencies were dispatched to complete a search for the aircraft in the area where the emergency beacon had been activated. At approximately 2 p.m. the downed aircraft was located on a steep hillside north of Conzelman Road away from the roadway and trails.
The bodies of Briare and Fox were recovered at the scene. Locating the aircraft, the Sheriff’s Office said, was hampered by heavy fog and condensation, which obscured visibility in the area.
A forensic postmortem examination with toxicology will be completed this week. The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the National Park Service Golden Gate Recreation Area (NPS), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division.
