Marin’s big vaccination SNAFU

A COVID-19 mass vaccination event turned into a free-for-all when Marin County health officials overdrew the number of shots needed for the event and were then caught short of people to give them to.

The vaccine at the event was perishable and could not be restored.

As a result a handful of people with elite jobs in the county got vaccinated, such as Novato schools Superintendent Kris Cosca and San Rafael City Schools Trustee Natu Tuatagloa. Both have taken withering criticism for jumping ahead of teachers in the shot line.

But Jim Hogeboom,  superintendent of San Rafael schools and former Novato schools superintendent, said the criticism was unfair.

It was not a situation of school administrators “sneaking” in line ahead of teachers. It was an overdraw of vaccine doses by the county that turned into a “free-for-all.” Hogeboom said he was not at the event and has not himself received the vaccine yet.

Matt Willis, Marin County public health officer, confirmed that the event was a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente and Marin County public health staffers for a mass vaccination event.

“That was a one-time overdraw.”
