After technical difficulties prevented the Novato Multi-Cultural Commission from making its annual report at the last Novato City Council meeting, Chair Nicole Gardner returned to the virtual Novato City Council Meeting on Sept 28 to make the report.
And it went off without a hitch.
Gardner explained to the Council that the Commission was working to “encourage respect” for Novato’s diverse communities. She told the Council that accomplishments in the last year included:
— Diversity training for all Novato Board, Commission and Committee members.
— Participation in the United Against Hate Week in conjunction with the Not In Our Town group.
— Celebrated Novato’s first Pride Month with Novato High School’s Sexuality and Gender Acceptance Club and San Marin High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance student leaders.
— Joined the Council in condemning hate against AAPI.
— Shifted the group’s meeting to 6 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of the month to encourage more community attendance.
In the coming year, Gardner told the Council that the Multicultural Commission hopes to host a diversity discussion and celebration event sometime in 2022. The details of what that might be are still in the planning stages.
