The Mill Valley Police Department cop log has changed. The move came last week.
Previously the public logs were largely unredacted and one of the more open logs in Mill Valley. Here is a sample log item from early January.
But this week, the cop log was issued with substantial redactions.
Lt. Jacqueline Graf-Reis via email said “Our office has been reviewing the Public Records Act. Our police activity logs needs to provide the incident number, date, time, general location, initial complaint and disposition (if there is one listed) under Government Code 6254 (f). We have reviewed the information provided and have made the appropriate changes.
Here is a representative sample of what the police log looks like now:
Mill Valley Herald Publisher Sherman R. Frederick said he found the move “odd,” given the call nationwide cry for increased police activity transparency.
“We’ve always found the Mill Valley Police Department’s cop log to be one of the more open in Marin. The administration has also been responsive to newspaper requests for details on crime activity, such as it is, in Mill Valley. It just seems like a strange way to go because the daily cop log is about the only way an average citizen can monitor for themselves police activity in Mill Valley.”
