Chief Ignacio Richard “Rick” Navarro was officially sworn in at a small, socially distanced ceremony on Monday, Feb. 1, at the Public Safety Building. The ceremony was shared live via videoconference so that members of Chief Navarro’s family from out of the area could watch.
Chief Navarro shared the following at the ceremony:
“Thank you, Madam Mayor, Vice Mayor, City Council members, and City Manager Piombo, for this extraordinary opportunity to become a member of the City of Mill Valley Team. I am very honored and humbled by the opportunity you have bestowed upon me to lead your exceptional law enforcement agency. I would not be standing here today if it were not for several very influential leaders who guided and mentored me throughout my life while serving in the United States Army and being a member of our Marin County law enforcement community. Specifically, I would like to mention Sheriff Doyle, former Undersheriff Finnegan, and all of the dear members of my COHORT Unit of the 82nd Airborne Division. Thank you for investing your time in me to make me a better person and leader.
“I will bring great character, integrity, and transparency to the Office of the Chief of Police, while emphasizing collaboration and partnerships with our community residents, business organizations, and civic groups. Our police department will continue to lean forward and listen to our community as we evolve as a forward-thinking and progressive law enforcement agency while building upon our community engagement and focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
“I want to thank the members of the Mill Valley Police Department who have welcomed me with open arms, and I would like to recognize Interim Chief of Police Lindsay Haynes for her exceptional work throughout this transition process. We will continue to mentor and develop the great men and women of the Mill Valley Police Department for the leadership challenges of the future while always striving for excellence.
“As all of you know, the law enforcement profession is never easy. We work long hours and nights while missing many birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. We would not be successful without an amazing support system at home. I want to thank my very sweet, incredible, and supportive wife, Jennifer, and our two great children Anthony and Amanda. You have always been my rock and supported me through this unbelievable journey. I would also like to recognize my mother, who is watching from home in Las Vegas. I love you all!
“Again, thank you, Madam Mayor, Vice Mayor, City Council Members, and City Manager Piombo, for entrusting in me this great opportunity to be your next Chief of Police.”
