Stories have been part of the human experience since the beginning of our time. They provide an opportunity to share common experiences, allowing for better understanding among us. Redwood trees, giants of the forest, stretch majestically towards the sky, reaching for the stars.
On New Year’s Eve, at the beloved fairy tale wedding venue Deer Park Villa, the two will converge. When you consider the special story behind the venue, it’s a perfect pairing.
Don Reed, producer of the event, explained that “I recently joined forces with Mike Ghiringhelli to produce and perform standup and storytelling events for Mac’s at 19 Broadway in Fairfax. Little did I know he was going to take me to a magical redwood grove that has been in his family for 100 years: Deer Park Villa. When I stepped into the circle planted by his grandfather, I immediately got choked up, called a friend and said, ‘I’m standing in a very special place right now, my friend. I can feel it.’”
In that moment, “Redwood Nights: Storytelling Under the Stars” was born.
An award-winning storyteller described as a “solo show powerhouse,” Reed will host The New Year’s Eve performance and feature four of the most talented storytellers he could find: Glynn Washington, JP Frary, Carla Clay, and Joe Klocek.
Glynn Washington is a master storyteller, media personality and producer. He is the host, creator and executive producer of Snap Judgment, a radio / podcast/ stage / television show distributed by PRX with a reach of 3 million.
JP Frary, a storyteller and woodworker who creates art in a studio on the old Naval air base in Alameda, has won six Moth Story Slams, Story Slam Oakland and Westside Stories. He also has been a featured storyteller on Back Pocket Productions and Beyond Borders Storytelling.
Carla Clay has won Marshall’s Women of Comedy Competition. She also appeared in the Purple Onion movie and on Comics Unleashed, hosted by Byron Allen.
Joe Klocek’s razor sharp wit is in high demand at clubs and corporate functions. He appeared on Last Comic Standing and made his national debut on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham” Comedy Show.
