Novato Council discuss the birds and bees

Raising chickens and keeping bees is against the law in the City of Novato. But perhaps not for long.

The Novato City Council has directed staff to come up with simple, non-bureaucratic rules to allow residents in the city to keep bees and raise chickens.

“I am not in favor of doing permitting,” said Mayor Pat Eklund. She just wants it to be allowable in as clear a way possible.

Just make it happen, Councilmember Amy Peele essentially told city staff, adding: “Without hiring a full-time chicken-beekeeping inspector.”

Currently, beekeeping is strictly forbidden in the city. And chickens are only allowed on property zoned agriculture.
