The City of Novato settled a 2020 lawsuit filed by John McCarthy, an ex-lieutenant in the Police Department, who claimed the department retaliated against him after he blew the whistle on an alleged sexual affair between the department’s ranking officer and a subordinate.
The City did not disclose the settlement to the public. The Independent Journal obtained the information through the California Public Records Act and reported that a $600,000 settlement was reached. The City said it paid the amount to make the suit go away and admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement.
Of course everyone knows the city attorney who probably has a hand in this is not a city employee. He doesn’t even have an office in Marin. His office is in Grass Valley. So what does he care about $ doled out?
