Novato school officials could not be more excited about the increase in students at the oft-troubled school district.
After a series of declines in enrollment that had the district looking at closing an elementary school, the Novato Unified School District saw an increase in students. Almost 300 more kids enrolled than last year.
The district’s superintendent resigned during the COVID years and was replaced by the former superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby. The former superintendent’s leadership was widely criticized by parents and teachers. Many parents voted with their feet, taking their kids out of the district.
But the new superintendent told the School Board last week that the numbers have turned around. Enrollment stands at 7,439, up from 7,168 last year. The big jump took place at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, where the school saw a 48-student increase year over year.
