August 1922

– The usual quota of speeding autoists were halted Sunday by Constable DeLucchi, and contributed to the upkeep of the county. All manner of excuses were made by the offenders, one fellow honestly admitting that he was so intently talking to his girl that he forgot. The parting of $10 will help him hereafter to remember a busy highway is no good place in which to make love. Another gay bird thought he would outwit the constable and paid no attention to the signal for him to stop. Mr. DeLucchi jumped in his machine and was soon in hot pursuit. He caught up after a speedway drive, and the offender had to settle with Judge Rudolff, who did his duty.

– Members of the Presbyterian church put in a busy workday trimming the palm trees planted when the church was first built, cleaning the grounds, mending doors and creaking windows and painting where needed.

– Miss Carmen Hallmyer and Mr. Steinburger, Novato folk dancers, with Lloyd Lieb Jr., who dances with another group, and his mother, Mrs. L.L. Lieb Sr., attended the annual Folk Dancers festival on the campus of Marin Junior College. Six hundred couples from the bay area put on their dances of all nations. The bleachers were crowded with spectators. After supper at the Travelers Inn, the folk dancers put on another exhibition in the Fairfax pavilion.

– A group of Novato dentists and county health officials proposed a water fluoridation plan at last night’s meeting of the North Mar in Water District, and the question could appear on the November general election ballot as an information item. If instituted, a fluoridation plan would cost $33,200 in capital outlays, and annual costs of $10,800, according to Eugene Churchill, water district manager. This figures out to 31 cents per capita, or $1.06 per water connection.

– George Schilling, who received half ownership in the Mission Lodge motel in the will left by the late Clara Meyers, has indicated to officers of the Novato Boys’ Club that he will bequeath his share to the organization. Half has already been bequeathed by Mrs. Meyer’s will, according to her San Rafael attorneys. Still to be worked out are probate and inheritance tax problems so that Schilling can turn entire ownership of the motel located at Front Street and Diablo Avenue to the boys’ club without penalty. The motel property is valued around $200,000.

– California has its 17th area code with the split of the new 650 area code from the 415-area code. However, most of the customers in the 415-area code, including those in Novato, will be largely unaffected by the new area code. The new 650 area code will serve most of San Mateo County, part of Santa Clara County and part of Santa Cruz County.

– The race for the two open positions on the Novato City Council has become very crowded and very interesting. With the deadline for filing 5 p.m. today, there are four official candidates—incumbent Pat Eklund, the city’s current mayor; and newcomers Johnny LaRosa, Kevin Cleek and Jim Henderson. Adding spice to the mix, former city council member Dennis Fishwick, a staunch slow-growth advocate, announced Tuesday night he would again seek a spot on the council. Henderson is generally in agreement with current city policies; LaRosa would like to bring new ideas to the council; while Cleek and Fishwick are strong critics of the current council. Also not running is incumbent Ernie Gray, who is stepping off the council after 20 years as an elected city official.
