A woman paid to advise Marin teachers on racial unity found herself in hot water after tweeting content on her private Twitter feed that some found antithetical to the unity message she teaches in her training.
Lori Watson received complaints for, among other things, a retweet of a person wearing a Mickey Mouse t-shirt in which the mouse is flipping the bird with both hands and saying “F*ck Trump.” She also “liked” tweets that used rhetoric such as “white blizzard of snowflakes” and under a tweet that showed a Black family in a car being harassed by white people she said: “I’m sorry, I would have pushed the pedal to the metal.”
Watson also tweeted: “Black people Amerika hates you!”
The Marin County Office of Education pays Watson to conduct four workshops a year and pays her as an independent contractor $3,000 per training session.
“I reached out and talked to her about those tweets,” Marin superintendent of school Mary Jane Burke, told the Independent Journal. “I’m not going to defend the indefensible. The tweets in my view were not appropriate coming from a person who has worked their whole life around equity and equitable opportunities and building relationships.”
Watson is also paid $12,000 by the Tamalpais Union High School District to teach racial unity to teachers and students in the district.
Tara Taupier, Tamalpais Union High School District superintendent, said “Dr. Watson leads professional development for staff on racial justice and racial consciousness.”
Watson also recently landed a $24,800 contract for similar work with the San Rafael Board of Education.
The controversial viewpoints seemingly advanced by Watson on her Twitter feed will not affect her work in Marin, both Burke and Taupier told the IJ.
