Rotary digs deep: Plants 43 trees on COM Campus

March 29, 2022 by Marin Leave a Comment

Rotary members, above, pitch in to plan 43 new trees at the College of Marin Indian Valley campus.

Local Rotary Clubs around the College of Marin Indian Valley campus planted 43 new trees along the banks of the creek bed running through the campus this month. This was the second year in a row of tree planting on the campus by local clubs working in conjunction with the College of Marin grounds staff.

This year’s cooperative effort involved more than 30 Rotarian volunteers and monetary grants totaling $5,500 from the clubs in the local area of Rotary District 5150, which includes Marin, San Francisco and San Marin Counties. Climate Action and Environmental Service Co-Chair Jay Dicker from the Rotary Club of Ignacio worked with the Novato, Marin Sunrise and San Rafael Rotary Clubs and the District Office on this environmental project. In addition, Dicker partnered with College of Marin staff Keith Rosenthal, Director of Advancement; Beth Rhodes, Manager of Community Outreach and Neil Sparrow, Lead Gardner, to make this project a success.

“Rotary has focused one of its major avenues of service on protecting our environment,” Dicker said. ” Projects like these help the college not only beautify their campus and restore the creek and stabilize the banks of the creek, but also reduce harmful CO2 in our air.”

To that end, Rotary Clubs in Marin are working on a challenge to reduce CO2 in the county by One million pounds within one year. By taking workshops with the not-for-profit local environmental group Resilient Neighborhoods, Rotarians have already acted to reduce and made further pledges to reduce over 263,503 pounds of CO2 emissions per year, or approximately 1/4 of their yearly goal.
