The Sausalito Police Department and Southern Marin Fire District are teaming up, while facing off in a brand-new holiday tradition: the First Sausalito/Southern Marin Holiday Bell-Ringing Challenge. The festive fundraiser will take place on Saturday, December 20, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Sausalito Ferry Landing on Tracy Way.
Firefighters and police officers will ring the bell throughout the event at dueling Salvation Army kettles, competing to raise the most donations. All funds raised will directly support the Salvation Army San Rafael Corps, which provides essential services, including food assistance, emergency support, and family programs to residents throughout Marin County.
To amplify the spirit of friendly competition, Sausalito and Southern Marin will also be informally competing with the Novato Police Department and the Novato Fire Protection District, who will be ringing for the Salvation Army at the same time in their community. The cross-county comparison adds a fun, regional layer of camaraderie and charitable rivalry.
“This is exactly the kind of positive community spirit we love to see in Sausalito,” said Police Chief Stacie Gregory. “Our officers are excited to participate, connect with the community, and support the work of the Salvation Army, especially during the holidays when the need is so great.”
Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Barnes added, “Friendly competition brings out the best in us. The Southern Marin Fire District is proud to partner with Sausalito Police for a cause that directly supports families right here in Marin.”
A representative from the Salvation Army San Rafael Corps expressed deep appreciation for this new effort.
“This event means so much to the families we serve,” said Salvation Army Corps Officer & Pastor Mark Stearns. “A fundraising goal of $3,000 in a single afternoon, powered by two respected public safety agencies, will have a real and immediate impact on our ability to provide food, emergency relief, and holiday support to Marin County households. This new tradition reflects the generosity and community spirit that makes Marin such a special place.”
Bell-Ringer Champion to Be Crowned
In addition to the department rivalry, a Department Bell-Ringer Champion will be recognized based on:
- Golden Bell Challenge: The longest continuous bell-ringing time without stopping.
- Fundraising Success: Strong donation totals during their ringing shift, to be announced following the event
A Festive Waterfront Celebration
Visitors can enjoy:
- Holiday carols along the waterfront by Sausalito Presbyterian Church Carolers
- A visit from the Gingerbread House Tour “Gingee’s”
- Treats and goodies for the family from Lappert’s Ice Cream
- A fun, cheerful community environment
The event’s fundraising goal is $3,000, with all proceeds benefiting essential Salvation Army San Rafael Corps programs serving Marin County residents.
“This challenge marks the beginning of a new Sausalito/Southern Marin holiday tradition,” organizers said. “It’s a fun, meaningful way to celebrate the season and support our local community.”
