Sausalito removed a tent set up outside City Hall last week.
On Thursday, May 20, the Sausalito Police Department with the assistance of the Sausalito Department of Public Works removed a tent from the north side of the Sausalito City Hall building. The owner of the tent was on scene and given the opportunity to remove belongings. But the tent-dweller declined. Police said all of the property in and around the tent was taken for safekeeping and is being stored at the police department until it is claimed by the owner.
The city posted the tent previously with a written “Notice to Vacate (Unauthorized Encampment)”. The Notice to Vacate stated that the owner of the tent had 72 hours to vacate. The owner of the tent was also verbally advised of the notice to vacate on that same day.
On May 20, the officers on scene located two small trail cameras above the tent which had been attached to an oak tree. The cameras were screwed into the tree with approximately 2-inch long screws, an act which is in violation of the City Ordinance Section 17.28.040 – Unlawful Injuring of a Tree. The Sausalito Police Department will forward a complaint to the court for that violation.
