Sausalito’s city website reports that Stacie Gregory has been appointed as the town’s new chief of police, effective Jan. 7.

Gregory’s appointment culminates a 26-year rise through the ranks of the Sausalito Police Department, from patrol officer to — most recently — acting chief.

In taking over leadership of the department, Gregory becomes only the second woman to serve in that capacity. She is also the first lesbian woman and member of the LGBTQIA+ community to serve as chief.

The decision by City Manager Chris Zapata to promote Gregory and forgo a formal recruitment was based on her distinguished career in public safety, her education and training, and her performance as acting chief during a time beset by staffing shortages and operational challenges.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as chief and will work hard to keep our community safe,” said Gregory. “I will continue to enhance the relationships our department has made in the community and will prioritize communication, transparency, and respect.”

Everyone is invited to a swearing-in ceremony and reception for Chief Gregory at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 in the banquet room of the Spinnaker Restaurant. The gathering will also recognize the recent promotions of six other members of the department:

  • Lieutenant Brian Mather
  • Lieutenant Brandon Rodgers
  • Sergeant Nick White
  • Sergeant Edgar Padilla
  • Corporal Adam Clerici
  • Corporal Ryan Walsh

Congratulations to Chief Gregory on her appointment can be directed by email to sgregory@sausalito.gov or via postal mail to 29 Caledonia Street, Sausalito, 94965.
