Fighting a bout with shingles, there is widespread speculation Sen. Dianne Feinstein will not return to Washington. Politico reported this week that the 89-year-old California senator has spent nearly two months away from the Capitol, including a stint in the hospital before returning home to San Francisco to recover.
Politico said it had spoken to several people close to Sen. Feinstein and they say “her diagnosis appears to have taken a heavy toll.”
In a statement released late Wednesday after Politico’s story posted, Feinstein did not identify an expected return date and said she has asked Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) to temporarily replace her on the Judiciary Committee so that the panel could process nominations. Politico said the move was “highly unusual.”
