Sen. Mike McGuire spoke to all Rotarians and guests this month at the Jonas Center at Indian Valley College campus of College of Marin. Sen. McGuire, who is the Senate Majority Leader in the state Legislature,  joined the club meeting at the invitation of Rotarian Dr. Moses Jacob.

McGuire’s district represents the north coastal area from Marin to Humboldt Counties.

He told the group that he supports free breakfast and lunch, K to 12, Free Community College with acceleration compatibility to universities, Humboldt College massive facility renovation with up-to-date campus and tech curriculum.

He expressed his shock at the academic rating of California Public schools’ student academic performance. California is tied in last place with Mississippi, he said. This is difficult to ccept, he told Rotarians, because California spends nearly the most money per student than any other state in the country.

McGuire passionately explained to Marin civic group what he’s doing to mitigate the Wildfires in Northern California. He identified  three main causes of California wildfires: PG&E, lightning and cars.

McGuire authored SB 884 and Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it into law this month. It is designed to safeguard communities and save lives by expediting the undergrounding of electric utility lines in California’s highest risk zones. PG&E has already buried 100 miles of utility lines. McGuire’s law will mandate 10,000 miles of lines be buried each year in the highest risk areas of Northern California.
