Let’s not pretend otherwise. It’s been a lousy year. The worldwide pandemic cast a long shadow on life in 2020.
It’s hard not to think about those who didn’t make it this far. Millions on the planet, hundreds of thousands of Americans, thousands of Californians and a little more than 100 here in Marin are not with us on this holiday. Much sadness, for sure.
For those of us who did make it, we have a special obligation to look out for others. In that spirit may I turn your attention to the San Francisco/Marin Food Bank. The work they do is important as ever.
Michael Wirkkala, the COO of the food bank tells us that “our community has rallied together to make sure neighbors don’t go hungry. While 2021 ushers in the promise of a post-pandemic future, many are still struggling. We are already seeing more people turn to us following the latest lockdown. We anticipate we’ll see many more as pandemic unemployment benefits run out at the end of the month.”

DEFUND THE POLICE?
As I read the story on A1 today of the big coordinated search for a man lost overnight in Marin, it reminded me to ask what people mean when they say they want to defund the police. I hope they don’t mean scaling back our ability to conduct search and rescues like this?
Or do they?
A DEFIANT LADY DIFI
California senior — emphasize “senior” — U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she’s not going anywhere before her term ends in 2024.
She’s been under attack for a lot of things, but mostly because she’s a more middle-of-the road Democrat. That’s brought about some vicious news stories of late in which it is alleged that even her own staff say that she’s one taco short of a combination place. Head senate Democrat Chuck Schumer even told “sources” that he had to tell her twice to step down as the minority head of the Judiciary Committee because she forgot about the first time he told her she was being relieved of her post.
Politics can be vicious sometimes.
But the point today is that she told the L.A. Times that she’s not going anywhere and that “I don’t feel my cognitive abilities have diminished.”
But, I am sorry to say, the viciousness behind the effort to push Feinstein out is far from over.
ONE MORE THING
— Has anyone lived long enough to buy a second bottle of Worcestershire sauce?
— I have faith in Pfizer and its COVID-19 vaccine because it makes Viagra. If Pfizer can raise the dead, it can cure the living.
— It bugs me people don’t know the difference between etymology and entomology.
And with that brutal ear bug, I’ll pick up my knitting and let myself out. We here at Marinscope wish you the very best holiday season. See you next week. Support your local newspaper.
