“This inaugural event is designed to be a celebration of maritime excellence and Sausalito’s local culture – food, live music, and art,” said show manager Mitch Perkins. “We are thrilled to see the city of Sausalito, the Sausalito Economic Development Advisory Committee, and the broader San Francisco Bay Area maritime community coming together to support this new event.”

Condor shot

Federal wildlife officials are looking for the person who shot and killed a California condor.

The condor was found last summer in Hollister. The endangered animal died from a gunshot wound, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said. A $5,000 reward is offered for information leading to a conviction. Anyone with information should contact the wildlife service’s Office of Law Enforcement in Sacramento at 916-569-8478 or email Special Agent Victoria Van Duzer at Victoria_Vanduzer@fws.gov. Callers with information may remain anonymous.

Marin school

enrollment

snapshot

The numbers for enrollment in Marin’s public schools have been released and show another slight decline in students. This year (2023-24), schools have seen a 1% decline in numbers. This is about the same as last year (2022-23). Marin schools took a big hit during the pandemic, declining 5% in 2020-21 and a 4% hit in 2021-22.

The Marin County Office of Education released the initial attendance figures. Countywide, 29,068 students showed up for class on the first day of school. Last year, there were 29,288.

Homeless TRO

law extended

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen extended the temporary restraining order preventing a San Rafael ordinance that restricts the homeless from taking effect. The TRO now goes through Oct. 2 and the judge asked both sides to provide him with more information on how the new law would take effect.

The city says it wants to keep the homeless from camping within 200 feet of each other. Large homeless encampments breed criminal behavior, the city says.

Homeless advocates argue that group camping provides safety for the homeless.

Climate plan

The City of Novato is updating its Climate Action Plan and is hosting the second workshop in a series of topic-focused workshops at the Sustainability Commission meeting on Sept.  21, 2023.

This workshop will focus on energy (building electrification, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building), which accounts for about 28% of our community’s greenhouse gas emissions. The interactive workshop format is informal, and is an opportunity to provide input on potential energy-related actions to be included in the updated Climate Action Plan.

The workshop will be held during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Sustainability Commission starting at 6 p.m. in Novato City Hall.

Oversight help

The Novato Unified School District is now accepting applications for the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee for the Measure G bond and NUSD.  This is an opportunity for citizens to oversight where Measure G Bond dollars are spent.

Vaccinations

on the way

In the latest update from the Marin Health Department, there were six people in the hospital “for” COVID. None in the ICU. There were four confirmed “outbreak” events in senior facilities and none in schools.

The timeline for availability of the fall COVID-19 booster is accelerating. Vaccines could begin to travel to local pharmacies and medical providers as early as this week, with the first shots being available locally next week.

In five of six Marin County wastewater sampling areas, virus levels have remained largely unchanged for the past two weeks after steady increases through July and August. Hospitalization rates have also declined over two weeks. It’s too early to declare an end to the summer surge. Marin COVID Level remains Medium. Marin Public Health urges residents to get the new fall booster when eligible to enhance community safety.

Evictions

After citizens raised concerns about eviction notices being given to elderly residents, Sausalito City Manager Chris Zapata met with representatives of the Portofino Riviera apartment complex on Sept. 6 at the request of Mayor Melissa Blaustein.

Owners of the property provided more information about the process through which 15 people received notices of eviction.

According to the apartment complex owners, the property is in such a deteriorated condition that it needs to be rebuilt, which requires people to leave their apartments.

While this is a private property matter, the owners have agreed to work with the City to make sure the residents are impacted as little as possible. The City will monitor the progress of the renovation as the project goes along.
