makes top 20
Dominican University of California has been named among the top 20 regional universities in the west by U.S. News & World Report in its annual ranking of universities and colleges in the United States.
The San Francisco Bay Area-based university has jumped five spots to number 18 in the Best Regional Universities (West) category of the U.S. News & World Report 2022-2023 Best Colleges guide. The ranking reflects Dominican’s strength in several categories, including graduation and retention rates, student selectivity, and alumni giving.
This is the first time the university has cracked the top 20 spot in the western region.

Senior Fair
The Marin Senior Fair begins Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Marin County Exhibit Hall.

On turning 100
Grand Slam tennis winner Vic Seixas turned 100 on Aug. 30. He currently lives in Tiburon. Tennis Magazine interviewed the oldest living Grand Slam champion, and the oldest living member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The writer characterized him as “humble” and “upbeat.”
He called his 100th birthday “a big one.” Asked about his secret to longevity, he replied in his understated tone: “It helps to keep yourself in shape.”

The co-ed sand volleyball season sponsored by the Sausalito Parks and Recreation Department begins Sept. 11. Games will be played on the Dunphy Park volleyball court. T

Addams Family comes to Novato Theater Company
The Novato Theater Company’s first show of its 103rd season is The Addams Family. The show is based on the characters created by Charles Addams with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. J.J. Nunez calls it a day
On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the San Rafael Police Department bid farewell to J.J. Nunez, who retired as the department’s Professional Standards Background Investigator.
He began his career in the late 1970’s. In the mid 90’s, Nunez retired from being a police officer and began working as the department’s Professional Standards Personnel Hiring and Background Investigator.
Fairfax
Open space
The Town of Fairfax is making preliminary moves to acquire and preserve for open space a plot of land known as “The Wall Property.”
The land is north of downtown Fairfax and is a popular spot for hikers and wildlife watchers. Dr. Alan Wall sold the land to developers who wanted to build homes, but it is currently zoned to accommodate only one home per 10 acres. Development plans hit snags when Fairfax officials were unwilling to rezone it for denser development.
Fairfax Mayor Chance Cutrano called the property a “gem conservation” opportunity.
More tennis
The town of Ross has approved a request from the Lagunitas Country Club to add a fourth tennis court to the facility. The vote was 3-0 with one member absent and one member recused.
Sen. McGuire
moves up
Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents Marin and Sonoma counties, will take over the Senate President Pro Tem leadership position in the state Senate. His position is expected to take effect in early 2024. He was first elected to the Senate in 2014. He lives in Sonoma.

Endurance
Festival
Now in its 15th year, the Marin Endurance Festival continues its tradition as one of the Bay Area’s longest standing endurance sporting events. It will be held Halloween weekend at the McNears Beach, with a course full of views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, China Camp State Park and more.
Athletes from around the globe will come together to test their limits in various endurance events, ranging from a 5K race to an Olympic triathlon. The sprint, olympic, and relay triathlon events will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, and are USAT sanctioned. The 5K/10K and Half will be on Sunday, Oct. 29.
This year, the Tri Club Challenge will be introduced, where clubs of all levels and disciplines are welcome to register. For more information go to marinendurancefest.com.
