MarinHealth

MarinHealth has earned a five-star rating, the highest possible, through the Overall Hospital Star Ratings program by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for 2023. This award represents a leading resource consumers use to determine where they’ll seek care. When compared to other hospitals – in the North Bay area, California, and across the nation – MarinHealth ranks among the very best. Of the 3,200 Medicare-certified, acute care hospitals evaluated by CMS, MarinHealth is ranked among the top 12% of top-performing hospitals nationwide to achieve five stars. MarinHealth is the only hospital in Marin County and one of only 47 esteemed hospitals in California to have received this recognition.

Bird talk

Jack Gedney, co-owner of Novato’s Wild Birds Unlimited and an Independent Journal columnist, will speak at the Novato Library on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. For more information, call the library at 15-473-2050.

‘Unmoored’

Join local author J.R. Roessl at the Mill Valley Library for a reading and conversation about her new book, “Unmoored”, a story of adventure, revelation, and redemption aboard a sailboat headed from the San Francisco coast to Central America and beyond. The conversation will be moderated by local author and historian Brian Crawford. It takes place in the Creekside Room of the library on Thursday, Aug. 31. Registration is required. More information on the library’s website.

$$$ crisis

The city of Novato is preparing a rebuttal to a report from the Marin Civil Grand Jury that criticized town leadership for failing to address the financial difficulties that bother the city. Council Member Pat Eklund, the longest sitting public official in Novato, took the criticism personally, claiming that the city “doesn’t operate” at a substantial deficit.
“We need to have a strong response,” she said.

Gas prices

The price of gasoline continued to edge upwards last week. The national average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas on Thursday, Aug. 9, was $3.828. In California, it was around $5.090 and in Marin County,  it ranged from $4.95 to $5.49.

History

The Mill Valley Library Events is now boasting a history room exhibit remembering Mill Valley’s counterculture. Also featured is an exhibit entitled “Above the Clouds: Postcards from Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway.
