Pride Month – a time in which America celebrates the rights and culture of the LGBTQIA+ community – will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1, with a Pride flag raising ceremony at City Hall in Novato. It will be followed up with events all throughout Marin County.
Here’s a quick rundown on the festivities.
– The Marin Flag Project began a few years ago with the goal of getting as many people and businesses to fly a Pride flag as possible. The effort has broadened to include many youth in Marin, individuals, businesses and chambers of commerce. The organization reports “the response is great.” As Pride Month nears, more than 1,000 flags have been distributed.
– In Sausalito, the Arts Center, 750 Bridgeway, will hold an LGBTQIA+ art exhibit on June 9. At the same time and place a “Homosocial” exhibit will be on display featuring a collection by Brian Van Camerick of photographs, original artwork and other queer media.
– San Anselmo will hold a flag raising on June 4.
– Marin County flag raising is on June 9.
– In Fairfax, the town will not only raise a flag, it will raise 30 flags and the Town Council has ordered public works to paint a rainbow crosswalk on Broadway. The colors will include the colors of the Progress Pride flag to symbolize intersex inclusion. The town will fly 30 Pride flags in the downtown corridor.
– San Rafael proclaimed June Pride month in 2021 and recognized June as “ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+) Pride Month. The City of San Rafael has a diverse LGBTQ+ community and is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equity for all people in the community. The city proclaimed “June is a time for the City to celebrate the dynamic LGBTQ+ community, raise awareness of quality services, and foster a dialogue to promote healthy, safe, and prosperous school climates and communities for all.”
So, what do all the letters stand for? The GoodRx website says: “The LGBTQIA+ acronym is used to describe either a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Sexual orientation refers to a person’s physical, emotional, and romantic attraction to another person — such as being straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Gender identity describes a person’s internal sense of being female, male, or someone outside of that gender binary.
“It’s important to note that gender identity is not determined by one’s sex assigned at birth and that sex and gender are not the same.
“As the world becomes more inclusive of people’s sexual orientation and gender identity, the letters within the LGBTQIA+ acronym have similarly evolved.”
