A press release announcing the surprise departure of another key Marin educator came last week from the Mill Valley School District.

The district issued the press release that read:

“Following a special board meeting on January 11, 2023, the Mill Valley School Board and District Superintendent, Dr. Kimberly Berman have mutually agreed that the Superintendent will conclude her four-year tenure with the District effective the last day of the current fiscal year (June 30, 2023.)”

District Board President, Dr. Michele Crncich Hodge said in the press release that “a lot of thought and deliberation went into this decision from everyone involved.”

The end of Berman’s employment was set for July 1. She was in her second 3-year contract with the district. She had two more years to go. She makes $300,000 a year, but will leave with a lump sum payment for vacation days, plus a full year’s pay with health benefits, the Marin Independent journal reported.

The Mill Valley board was scheduled to discuss the replacement process for Berman this week. She is the third Marin superintendent to announce plans to call it a day. Earlier, Jan La Torre-Derby of Novato and Jim Hogeboom of San Rafael said they would depart Marin education on June 30.

In the initial press release, which Dr. Berman said she will not comment further, she is quoted to have said: “I am so proud of the work we have accomplished over the past 4 years. It’s been a real team effort — from the board, to administration to the teachers and staff to the parents and District partners. Everyone has played an important role in increasing student achievement.”
