The death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police drew opposite responses in Marin.
Marin Sheriff Jamie Scardina’s said:
After viewing the video from the Memphis Police Department, I am shocked, angry and frustrated. While the officers are being held accountable and their consequences will be determined in a court of law, there is no doubt that their actions will impact Law Enforcement as a whole.
“I want to make it clear that the Marin County Sheriff’s Office considers the actions of the police officers in Memphis to be against everything we believe. We will continue our hard work of making sure that everyone our personnel encounters is treated with decency and fairness.”
The Marin County Office of Equity, however, sent out its January newsletter containing what appears to be a sweeping claim that all police officers are part of a “white supremacist institution” that “hunt Black bodies.”
In the context of celebrating the MLK holiday, the Office of Equity said:
“The recent murders of Keenan Anderson and Tyre Nichols at the hands of police upholding a white supremacist institution are traumatizing examples of the real and true hunting of Black bodies in this country.”
